Divorce attorneys can actually save you money, over taking bad — however well-meaning — advice from friends or relatives who think they know best. Don’t get burned by bad advice. While relying on loved ones for emotional support at this trying time, there is no substitute for the professional services of an expert divorce attorney.

If your needs extend only to some advice for doing your own divorce, inquire ahead of time to see if they are willing to do this and what it would cost.
Most divorce attorneys will consult for nothing or for a token fee, such as $15 to $25. Rates vary; expect to pay from $50 to $200/hour, with $100 being common. It has to feel right, though — price is not everything. You should be comfortable with the divorce attorney.
Unless there is a clear reason for doing so, do not retain a divorce attorney. In retaining one, you hand the divorce lawyer your power and ability to act – they are representing you. In this way, they will fight for you, but the last thing you need is more fighting. When retaining an attorney, the more trouble you have, the more money the attorney makes. Keep it simple and minimize the wear and tear on yourself at this emotionally difficult time.
