Reasons For Divorce

Reasons For Divorce

There are many reasons for divorce, each of them specific to that particular couple’s marital relationship, personal problems and their individual experiences. None of the reasons may seem common to the couples going through a divorce. However, there are some common reasons for divorce that does seem to recur. Here are some of the reasons for divorce:

1. Infidelity

Infidelity is a response by a spouse to the real breakdown of their marital relationship, and is not itself a cause. Whatever the case, infidelity is one of the most sited causes for divorce. Studies show that adultery takes place in over half of failed marriages. Spouses may be unfaithful consistently during a marital relationship, intermittently or just once. Unfaithfulness can result due to anger, resentment and many other causes.

2. Communication breakdown

After living for a number of years together, couples become increasingly unable to communicate in a mutually meaningful fashion. This may be due to either spouse’s inability to avoid exchanges which always result in conflict. This is an indicative of a communication breakdown in the marriage.  In extreme situations, a growing inability to deal with any verbal exchanges without conflict could be indicative of a grave problem that warrants the attention of a mental health expert. In most cases, other problems facing a couple in a marriage may have their roots in communication breakdowns.

3. Financial issues

Economic strain may lead to a divorce or collapse of the family. Every couple has to deal with money issues at some point in their lives, and when there is not enough to maintain the family; differences in priorities are brought to a head. In addition, disagreements over the allocation of resources within the marriage can be enough to end an already strained relationship.

4. Emotional, physical or psychological abuse

In cases where either spouse is abusive towards children or each other, the other spouse has enough grounds for divorce. Emotional and psychological abuse includes verbal insults, humiliation, taunting and consistent negative reinforcement.  Physical abuse may range from violence, manhandling, fighting to physical bullying of an individual. Any kind of an abuse in a marriage is enough reason for divorce.

5. Sexual incompatibility

Studies have shown that the average strength of the sex drive in women and men is most similar throughout life for couples aged at least ten years apart. Generally, most people marry only a few years apart and as the couple approaches their mid 30s, the inclination is for the strength of their respective sex drives to fall out of synchronization. This problem is further aggravated if there is varied sexual taste and preferences between the couple or any other setbacks in the bedroom.

6. Addiction

An addiction is an acquired urge to repeatedly engage in an action, to the point that it affects other priorities negatively. It is possible to be addicted to games, food, drugs, gambling and myriad of other things. Any addiction problem that can be show to causing harm is clear reason for the issuance of an at-fault divorce.

7. Differences in priorities and expectations

This is a somewhat imprecise idea that describes cases where married couples have found marriage or either spouse to be so hugely different to their expectations at the beginning of the union that they wish the marriage to end. Furthermore, it can describe relationships where one spouse undergoes an abrupt change in life priorities. Other marital strains, cruel medical trauma, or mid-life crises are often the reason for such divorces.

In conclusion, reasons for divorce vary from one couple to another. But whatever the reason, there are situations where divorce is the only solution.
